Home-Grown: 5 Local Beauty Lines Dana Is Loving
St. Pete is all about the outdoor weekend festival, and I make a point of popping by events like Crafts & Drafts and Localtopia, wad of cash + business cards in hand. They're such a great way for me to meet the many indie vendors down here who are whipping up excellent home-grown skin, aromatherapy and bath + body merch.
In keeping with St. Pete's artsy / alternative / holistic ethos, most of the beauty lines I'm encountering locally are clean + organic. Fine with me; although I doubt I'll ever want to totally ditch the chemicals (I'm pretty addicted to retinol), I absolutely prefer natural bath and body products. I'm also always on the hunt for less-toxic riffs on insect repellants.
Here are the lines I've recently nabbed products from and really like:
Bodhi Basics: These gorge little gems are crafted in small batches right here in St. Pete. This is probably the most sophisticated of the Tampa Bay-area brands I've come across so far. There's a wide assortment of products I'd love to get my mitts on, including a mini-range of crunchy "Ritual" fare, like Full Moon Water, Aphrodite Anointing Oil and a host of smudges and sages to blast the evil spirits outta your abode. Sign me up. Crunchy is my middle name.
Pure & Simple Treats: This pretty little line is based in Lakeland, home to the deeply awesome Legoland. Scrolling through their Etsy shop right now, I spotted a tiny tin of Coffee Eye Balm that I know I bought along with three of the Aromatherapy Essential Oil Blend roll-ons (Relax, Bug Bite + Respiratory & Sinus Relief). As soon as I finish this blog post, I'm goin' huntin' for that balm. I gotta case of the under-eye puffies.
Lola's Handcrafted: Whoa, I just spotted my next purchase from this brand on the company's website: an artisan wooden bath tray that spans the width of tub and is perf for plunking down a glass of wine and a book. How genius is that? In the meantime, I'm happy with my Sandalwood + Patchouli perfume, a soothing blend of hippie-meets-Barbie.
Organic Reverence; I was lucky enough to chat with the owner of this not-so-tiny brand - Jillian Kinsman-Barrett - while shopping her not-so-tiny stall at Localtopia. A certified aromatherapist, I plagued her with Qs about her Peaceful Slumber roll-on, which is laced with valerian. Unfortunately, I suffer from "sleep-maintenance" insomnia, which means I konk out the second my head hits the pillow, but then I pop-up wide awake circa 2 am and immediately start trying to solve the world's problems. It's kinda horrible. After applying this new brew to all my pulse points before bed, I slept soundly. And when Thunder + Lightning (my insanely gorgeous Maine Coon-rescue meow-meows) woke me up at about 3 am for "breakfast," I re-applied my Peaceful Slumber and went right back to sleep. Yaaas queen.
My Favorite Bath Products: Ya gotta love a straightforward name like My Favorite Bath Products. (Kinda reminds me of Florida Beauty Problems. Let's just cut to the chase, boys + girls!) Ever since I nabbed this Clean Cotton Body Lotion, I can't stop huffing it. I have no idea what it's scented with to give it its bright crispness, but I do know what it's formulated without: parabens, gluten + sulfates. Bonus: I paid a whopping $6 for this 8 oz bottle of utter yumminess.
