Palm Beach Shelfie Starring Natalie Marx
A few months ago, what was supposed to be an overnight with my Palm Beach-based cousins Natalie and Eric Marx and their tweenaged tot-lettes turned into a five-night hang. Given that I packed for one night, and needed to borrow a few things, Nat graciously showed me her beauty stash, offering to share the entire kit and caboodle.
Um hello, it was pretty tremendous. I thought it could make a great FBP shelfie, especially for women who’ve moved here from northern climes and are adjusting to how the weather and well water affects their skin and hair.
Nowadays, instead of power-suiting up for her investment banking career, you’ll see Nat donning a lot of Lilly Pulitzer, from morning tennis with her tourney-winning team to errands, dinner and the occasional black tie.
“I live in fancy Palm Beach but am not fancy," she says. "I like spending money on my kids before me, so sometimes I buy cheap, sometimes I buy expensive.”
Though I'm only a few years older than Natalie, her lush Latina locks look a decade younger than mine; her dark brown color is even and vibrant, appearing super lustrous and healthy.
Nat's secret: “We have a water softening system and a drinking water filtration system for every faucet in the house. This means we only need a small amount of soap for cleaning. It’s also the reason my hair always comes out great. After living on Singer Island, where my water was yellow, I believe this is the most valuable thing in our house.”
“I’ve changed a lot that I do beauty-wise since moving here. A drastic difference was trying Oribe Shampoo + Conditioner for Beautiful Color. My West Palm Beach hairstylist Christina Clark recommended it, and now I can’t live without it for adding extra sheen and gloss. A saving grace. What a treat!“
Here’s what else she stocks:
Moroccan Oil Intense Curl Cream - I use this when I don’t blow my hair out, letting it go natural. This product works best when I cocktail it with OGX Moroccan Sea Salt Spray for beachy, bouncy hair.
Moroccan Oil Styling Gel - For styling my hair or when using a curling iron or hot curlers.
Sebastian Shaper Plus - My hairspray since growing up on Long Island.
Redken Pillow Proof Dry - Every day, I spray my daughters’ hair as well as mine before a blowout. It’s a primer, sealing in moisture.
OGX Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum - Cheap and cheerful replacement for It’s a 10 when I can’t get that.
It’s a 10 Miracle Oil Keratin - Lifeline for Florida hair. IMHO, this oil just seals in moisture.
Let me just end this with my thoughts on dry shampoo. When I get my hair blown out and want it to last, this is such a great way to extend it. I've been a forever daily wash/shower/style woman. As I get older and wiser, I realize that having a few days between shampoos really helps.
Nars Monoi Body Glow - OMG! This bronzing oil makes your legs and arms ready for that LWD - the Little White Dress in Palm Beach takes the place of the LBD.
Jo Malone Red Roses - a yummy fragrance for daytime.
When it comes to skin, I like to try new things. I believe moisture helps in any form, and have been known to put foot cream on my face in moments of need.
True Blue Spa Shea It Isn't So Super Rich Foot Cream - My children bought it for me as I walk barefoot a lot. A big dollop before bed keeps my feet a little more humane.
Supergoop Setting Mist with Rosemary - Supergoop is the most awesome sunblock line.
Philosophy Time in a Bottle, The Microdelivery exfoliating facial wash, Renewed Hope in a Jar, Purity - Now that I'm past 50, I take advice. Trying Philosophy was life-changing; it's my favorite moisturizing combo.
Admire My Skin: Intense Hydration Collagen Cream - My friend Amy Romero launched this line, and boy it is fantastic! I get it on Amazon, and you just reminded me to reorder this! Thank you!
Seoul Ceuticals Glow Serum - Amy also launched this powerful anti-aging serum with vitamin C, also on Amazon. I use it with Admire My Skin.
ROC Deep Wrinkle Night - ROC is my replacement when traveling and forgetting to pack a night or under-eye cream. I buy this in CVS, easy and good.
Beautycounter Rejuvenating Eye Cream - I hosted a party and tried a few products. This eye cream has caffeine in it, and I am hoping for magic.
Algenist Eye Balm - Another great eye cream. I have so many, but use this when running out of Beautycounter.
Circadia by Dr. Pugliese Reversal Serum - Another vitamin C serum on-hand before discovering Seoul Ceuticals.
Coola Makeup Setting Spray - This was part of a sun-safety set. Haven’t yet tried it but probably should.
No 7 Beautiful Skin Foaming Cleanser - When I was living in London, I bought No. 7 products at Boots. When Target started carrying the line, I had to buy it all. It’s ok for young skin, but I’m discovering my needy, aging skin needs a little more help.
Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Firm - I started using Dermalogica in London, and it is truly a great product.
Vitality Works B12 sublingual supplement raspberry - My doctor annually tells me to take more B12 and I continually forget. This is a tasty way of getting it.
Bliss Hot Salt Scrub - Great for exfoliating.
Dr. Teal’s Body Oil - Soothe + Sleep - A wonderful therapeutic massage oil for my tennis-ached legs.
Bath + Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief - I like two products from this line: Eucalyptus Basil body lotion - which I adore the smell of for aromatherapy - plus Eucalyptus Spearmint body wash, which makes a delicious bubble bath. I soak for hours.
Body Shop French Lavender Massage Oil - I massage this on my husband’s shoulders and head. (note from Diana: Awww. Very sweet.)
Aura Cacia Organic Essential Oil - This was a tea tree oil leftover from my creation of lice meds when both daughters were hit. I made a lethal weapon to rid them, using all natural ingredients and still use it for other skin ailments.
