Not Quite Ready To Bare Arms? Try This Chic Strategy For Covering Up

Not Quite Ready To Bare Arms? Try This Chic Strategy For Covering Up

The late great Nora Eprhon may have hated her neck, but you dear ladies of Collier County have a total thing about your upper arms. I hear arm smack-talk from at least seven out of 10 customers I advise while toiling (happily! so happily!) at Sandpiper

And you're not shy about it, either. Like when you point out your UADD ("Under Arm Dingle Dangle," an oft-used Isaac Mizrahi term) totally unprompted.

At least you arm smack-talkers are in good company. Even the fierce Cindy Crawford, who circa 2000 was launching her first workout video, bitched about her triceps and how unresponsive they were to all her hard work. Instead, she over-compensated on biceps, resulting in exquisite guns.

Seriously, arms are so important to our overall look down here that it could be its own vertical on #FBP. (Vertical = tech-speak for category.) And with your feedback, maybe it will be.

But take comfort dear reader; this problem is worse in your head than it is in reality. It's not like you walk around flapping during the course of the day. Why I should have to point that out to you - as I do daily - is nuts. But I'll continue you to do so, while also offering you solid solutions via this blog post.

First and foremost: making smart fashion choices. In Florida, where it’s hot and humid half the year, finding a cute top for you in a comfortable fabric is quite the challenge as you all seem to have very strong opinions about which necklines are most flattering for your face and neck.

Ladies, let’s turn this around, by focusing on lovely half- and 3/4-sleeved tops that showcase the good part of anyone’s arms - from the elbow down.

FBP’s criteria: 1) Florida-friendly colors; 2) good fabrics that wash well, feel good against the skin and don't require ironing; 3) options that are affordable and widely available in local specialty stores - key if you're the type who likes to try before buying

FBP-Sanctioned,

Arm-Friendly

Fashion Recos

  • JudyP, my go-to when trying to find a specific color to match other parts of an outfit. Hundreds of sophisticated colors, available in several necklines, and made with a luxurious double-faced knit fabric that looks divine on most women.
  • If you’ve ever spotted Kathie Lee around Key Largo, she may have been wearing Clara Sun Woo, a line designed by mother-daughter team. Offered in myriad travel-friendly styles, these babies simply do not wrinkle. That's why you spot this brand in so many of Florida’s specialty boutiques. FBP’s pick: The mock-neck open shoulder hints at a very t i n y glimpse of skin, and hides your neck if you happen to hate that too.
  • Looking for a sexy long-sleeved top? I own Bella Dahl's lightweight Tencel peplum-sleeve pullover (shown below) and so do many of the women I work with. Anytime one of us is wearing it - BOOM - sold to the nearest customer.

Cool Cotton Options

  • Wilt, as shown above, designs T-shirts that just happen to make your derrière look fantastic too. Why? The strategic draping along the hips. And don’t rule out their long long-sleeve looks, as the lightweight fabric remains comfortable even during Florida’s - ahem - wilting summer weather.
  • Saint James Galathée with 3/4 sleeves. Think about trying a size smaller than you usually wear, but NEVER throw this in the dryer. (As my husband did with mine. Grrrr...) It will most definitely shrink.
  • Lilla P. Imagine the softest cotton tee ever, in face-flattering shades. This is something I’d sleep in and wear year round. Too many gorgeous shades and silhouettes to share in one post, but worth every penny.
  • Necessitees, which incorporates 6% spandex into its fabrication. Cool and maintains its shape. Yours truly is donning one in her profile photo on FBP’s about page.

Beauty Tip: Several girlfriends swear by Orlane Refining Arm Cream. As the great Bobbi Brown told me years ago, moisturizer makes your face come alive. Why not try this for your arms?
