Glitter Is The New Neutral

Glitter Is The New Neutral

Buh-bye Ballet Slippers

Are you stuck in a polish color rut? While frosty tones scream Florida Old Lady, why not consider glitter, which is EVERY. WHERE. this season? Sephora may call glitter “the new black” but it’s also a great neutral to pair with the myriad metallic Lilly sandals worn as a daily shoe down here.

And talk about staying power: glitter lacquer adheres so well it's actually quite the effort to remove it. That makes it the smart shellac or gel alternative for longer-wear use, as chipping is decidedly less noticeable.

3 Tips For Making Glitter Polish Work

1. Decide on either fingernails or toenails. Doing both negates the subtlety. (I learned this the  hard way.)

2. Consult your open-toe shoe wardrobe for color guidance. Select a clear or skin-toned base with mixed platinum, gold and silver flecks suspended in the polish. FBP loves Smith and Cult’s Gay Ponies Dancing in the Snow and Vegas Post Apocalyptic. And most top-salon polish brands, including Essie and Zoya, offer gorgeous options.

3. Two coats is a must. You want those tiny flecks of shiny chicness to pop, and they won't with just one coat.

3 Great Southwest Florida Nail Salons To Try*

* Remember: We're in season. Be sure to book in advance.

1. Philip Douglas & Co. in Naples: Pricey ($$$$), super glam and spotless, using only best-in-show products, hence the expense. Definitely splurgeworthy. Be sure to ask for Goreth.

2. If you’re a gal on a budget, try Nail Art ($$) at Parkshore Center/Naples. For best results, make your appointment with John. Not as great a selection of polishes, so if there’s a particular shade you’re fond of, bring it with you.

3. Paint Nail Bar in Sarasota ($$-$$$) just might be the best nail salon in Florida IMHO. Meticulously clean, "5-Free" products (no, not free stuff, just "free" of the five most-egregious nail-lacquer chemicals) and super-competent technicians, While gorgeously designed, it's convivial, not hush-hush and precious. Bonus points for not being in a strip mall. I didn’t want to leave, and wish they’d open near me.
